Reflections of Our Savior

March 2018

Then I turned my face to the Lord God,
seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy
with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.
[Daniel 9:3 ESV]

Dear members and friends of Our Savior:

Perhaps you remember the "Three R's." You heard about them when you were a young person in school. You recall that the "three R's" are reading, writing, and arithmetic. While these three areas of study do not actually start with an "R" (and we knew that as kids in school), we learned that these three disciplines were basic to all of our future learning and that they are basic to our whole life. We were taught that if you could learn to read, learn to write, and learn to do basic arithmetic, you could learn great things and have a richer and fuller life.

Christians have "Three R's" in their spiritual life, too. They are "Repentance — Renewal — Recommitment". These are the "three R's" of our Christian faith. "Repentance" is knowledge of our sinful condition and need for a Savior, plus the good news that Jesus, the Son of God, died and rose again to save us from our sins. "Renewal" is the new life that is ours through Christ. It is a new life that is characterized by freedom from guilt, a life at peace with God, and an eternal future with our Savior in heaven. "Recommitment" is our desire to live a life of thankfulness to our God in response to his grace and love in Christ. It is characterized by a life that looks forward to learning more from God's Word about all he has done and continues to do for us, and by the desire join with your church in worship and thanksgiving.

I call "Repentance — Renewal — Recommitment" the Vthree R'sV of the season of Lent also. During the Lenten season, we get a vivid view of our Savior's love as he goes to the cross to pay for the sin of the world. We are renewed by the gospel of forgiveness of sins. We are then motivated to recommit ourselves to hearing his Word often as we join in worship with our fellow believers.

This reminder is important for all of us, even those of us who are in church pretty much every week. Sometimes even active church goers can lose the focus of why they call themselves "Christian". This Lenten season, make the time for "repentance, renewal, and recommitment".

These "three R's" are basic to our spiritual lives. By God's grace in Christ, applying these "three R's" to your life, you can have a richer and fuller life. Amen.
