Reflections of Our Savior
Dear members and friends of Our Savior:
“What does it matter?” “We’re all on the same team, right?” “All you need is Jesus, right? All that other church stuff isn’t as important as having Jesus.”
Perhaps you’ve heard people...Christian people...say those things. But you haven’t said those things, right? Right...because you are a Lutheran Christian. And to a Lutheran Christian, it all matters. Not all churches are “on the same team.” We need faith in Jesus, plus everything he taught. And finally, yes, all that other Biblical teaching is as important as having Jesus, because it is all about Jesus. To minimize any teaching of the Bible is to minimize Jesus, because it all points to what our Savior did for us.
This year, 2017, we are observing the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation. We are Lutheran Christians still committed to the principles and teachings of the Reformation: Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone.
The time is right for another reformation, some people say. But I say it’s time for clarity...clarity about what we believe and teach, and why. Some people say that doctrines divide churches so many churches downplay clear doctrine in favor of a “you believe what you feel” sort of theology.
On the other hand, true confessional Lutherans downplay personal feelings in favor of truth...the truth of God’s Word and the Lutheran Confessions. The fact is, it is false doctrine that divides churches. True doctrine, based on the authority of God’s Word, unites believers around a common faith and practice.
Yes, it’s time for clarity. Please accept my invitation to attend this summer’s Bible study (held on Sunday morning and Wednesday evening) to explore Reformation truths: Grace, Faith, Scripture.
